For our film study and the essay which you will need to write for the external examination, you will need to be able to write about visual and verbal film techniques.
We have noted that there are many visual techniques such as:
shot types
camera angles
lighting
mis en scene
costuming
special effects
props
There are only FOUR main verbal film techniques. These are :
music
voiceover
dialogue
sound effects
As well as the above techniques we need to be looking at 'editing' which is the way shots are put together. (These are a part of the visual techniques)
You should now be able to recognise the basic shots and camera angles as well as some new techniques such as Montage, Dutch Angle shots and Motifs. We have noted the 'iconic' shot of Latika (top right of this page) which occurs periodically throughout the film.
